If you’ve been keeping up with all of the spring and summer trends for 2014, then you are probably aware that wearable art has become wildly popular. Eye popping colors have made their way across runways worldwide. High fashion Labels such as Prada and Chanel, among others, have taken spring color pops to the next level. Being a life sized canvas is the new thing.
To some, this trend may appear gaudy. I mean, anything can be gaudy if you don’t know how to style it. Unless you plan on walking a runway in the near future, you should probably not be stepping out of your house in a full ensemble of art prints. That would be tacky. The idea is to incorporate individual pieces of art into your wardrobe. If you work this trend right, it is actually quite lovely.
I personally love the wearable art trend. As a fan of simplicity, I normally keep my wardrobe basic and let my jewelry do the talking. Adding some art to the mix gives me the ability to express myself in a way that I have never experienced before.
I wanted to demonstrate how easy it is to wear this trend on a daily basis and for any occasion, so I have created a few different outfit ideas for those of you that are interested in giving this trend a shot.
Date Night - The Art Print Bag: An art print bag is a safe way to go if you are trying this trend for the first time. Since you want your art to be the focus of your look, black is a good option for the actual outfit.
An art print bag, such as this Art Pop clutch by Kindah Khalidy, is perfect for date night. An art print bag allows you to take a risk without over doing it. A simple black dress and a nice pair of black heels create an elegant and date appropriate look. You can further enhance this look by selecting the right jewelry. Gold accessories will add a nice touch to this outfit. For this specific look, I would pair the Vivian Jacob Gold CZ Double Scalloped Earrings and the Matterial Fix Gold Lattice Hinge Bracelet. I would then finish the look off with a natural looking lipstick. I really like Tolède by NARS.
For the Office - The Art Print Skirt: When it comes to work attire, most people want to keep their wardrobe on the conservative side. Doing so does not have to mean sacrificing fashion. An art print skirt is certainly a head turner, but it can also make for fantastic work wear.
This wearable art print skirt by Zara is the perfect look for work when paired with a more conservative black turtle neck sweater. By adding a pair of high top black leather boots, you make the work even more work appropriate. As I said, dressing for work does not mean sacrificing fashion. You can add some more color to your look with your jewelry. The Seraphina Aqua Oval Pendant Necklace and the Seraphina CZ Aqua Teardrop Ring enhance the art print skirt. Add a classic nail color like “Before He Cheats” by Deborah Lippman.
Out with Friends - The Art Print Top: When out with friends, an art print top is both fun and unique. You can wear it out to lunch or to the beach and you are going to look cute.
I enjoy pairing smaller jewelry items with looks that I plan to wear out during the day. I love the effect that the Carolee Crystal Heart Key Pendant Necklace gives this outfit when paired with the Foxy Originals Crystal Sky Earrings and the SKU Jewelry Gold and CZ Bar Ring. The jewelry items help to create a breezy summer time look when paired with this Evie Kemp art print top and a pair of jean shorts. If you want to finish the look off with a cute pair of sandals, try something jelly. Jelly shoes are in this season, and this pair from Kate Spade completes the look.
