How To Dress Up This Spring Season’s Power Suit

It’s not breaking news that menswear continually holds influence on some of fashion’s most sought-after female collections. With each new season, this trend takes on an updated form, from tweed trousers to broader shoulders to boyfriend cardigans. This spring season, we’re looking forward to blurring the lines again in what Style.com has labeled the “alpha female” trend—power suits that are in the business of making fashionable statements. Stella McCartney’s version goes overboard in oversized shoulders, Hedi Slimane at Saint Laurent did what he does best in classic French tailoring, and Victoria Beckham went super-slim. While varied, the emphasis here is on strong and sexy (now, that’s a trend we can get behind). So, how can you expect to accessorize?

Go for strong shapes and bold metals. This Janis By Janis Savitt’s gold collar necklace plays into the menswear lean while accentuating a suit jacket’s neckline. The long, layered pendant (like Sandy Hyun’s layered necklace) sits nicely between lapels and offers a pop of color. Want a more timeless look? A lengthy chain necklace is your go-to. Try this rope chain necklace from Ali NY.

Make an unexpected move without overshadowing the ‘fit—choose a pair of small, unique studs. Add a dash of rich hues with Misha Of NY’s whiskey quartz stud earrings; stay classic yet uninhibited in Bing Bang’s Monroe duet earrings; or edge out the same old, same old in Angel Court’s Trace earrings.

While bracelets run the risk of getting consumed by your wrist-length sleeves, rings are the break-out alternative. Deeply toned and large gems offset single-shaded suits (we like Betty Carre’s gold and turquoise cocktail and Tat2 Designs white jade and gold web frame rings). Revisiting that bold metal tip we made above, Erica Anenberg Isis Twosome ring and Jules Smith’s rose gold Americana Classic ring are strong contenders. Of course, a cigar band makes perfect sense here too—go with Karen London’s Alexandria.

Bottom line, go bold or go home.
