When Hannah Horvath entered our lives in April 2012, we knew we had a new – as the critics, and Hannah herself, often say – voice of our generation. Painfully awkward, utterly devoid of self-awareness, and hopelessly idealistic in her perspective, Hannah and her Girls – responsible, self-obsessed Marnie; bubbly, voice-of-reason Shoshanna; and unpredictable world-traveler Jessa – provide insight as they truck through that often unpleasant, occasionally horrifying, sporadically heartwarming, and perpetually confusing time period known as your twenties. The girls are currently on hiatus, but we miss them and look forward to season 3 on HBO, which is currently in production. In the meantime, we’ll get our Girls fix by delving into a discussion of their individual styles and picking out some signature pieces we’d love to see them wear.
Shoshanna is ultra feminine but she has an offbeat edge (who could forget that lopsided mega-bun she sported towards the end of season two?). For Ray’s former lover, we have selected some stylish pieces that are ultra-feminine and college-girl-budget approved. We’d love to see the NYU student in this Blu Bijoux Gold and Crystal Bow Ring or this stunning, slightly unconventional Heart Pendant Necklace by Shlomit Ofir. These pieces are unique and girly. We feel like Shosh would love them – but coming from her, it might sound more like “OMG, these pieces are like totally essential.”)
Jessa Johansson is the show’s resident wild child, a New Age hippie and world traveler who has a hard time staying in any one place for very long. She’s sort of the most exciting of the girls when it comes to style and jewelry, because you
get the feeling Jessa would wear – or do – anything. Her worldly style is eclectic and costumey to say the least (she incited envious smirks everywhere when she rocked that insane feathered cape to a Brooklyn warehouse party in season one’s “The Crackcident” episode). For Jessa, we would love to see her rock Annie Hammer’s Tusk Drop Earrings – an eclectic pair wrought with attitude and individuality. The Black Snake Leather Bracelet is another piece in that collection that we think Jessa would approve of; hip and modern, yet durable and vintage-esque, this bracelet is 50 shades of cool. David Aubrey’s Tibetan Medallion Necklace is one part tribal chic, one part eccentric, one part trendily dramatic, and 100% Jessa.
Ohhh Marnie. Marnie Micha
els has had quite the year. She started the series off on top and we’ve sort of watched it all fall away from her, culminating in a climax of awkward brilliance when she karaoked Kanye West’s “Stronger” for Charlie at his Forbidden App Party. All the while, though, Marnie has remained impeccably dressed and ultra-refined. For Marnie, her jewelry entering season 3 is going to reflect her essential sophistication, (hopefully) combined with a little bit of frugality, seeing as how she was downsized from being an art gallery assistant and was last seen hostessing. For Marnie, this sleek Andara Gold and Tan Leather Snap Cuff Bracelet possesses that understated glamour that Marnie rocks so effortlessly. We would also love to see her sport some simple, classy, everyday beautiful (and affordable) studs like these Blu Bijoux White Crystal Button Earrings.
Hannah is the most challenging girl to style. Her taste is often questionable and her choices are eclectic, to say the least. We sort of get the notion that Hannah’s perpetual journey of self-discovery is complimented by frequent style changes. A large part of who Hannah is can be defined by her upbringing – her desire to break free of her Midwestern childhood and emerge as a young writer in the city – so her wardrobe choices often reflect that desire to rebel against suburbia (shorteralls, anyone?) Hannah is unconventional and colorful, but remains relatively subtle in her style choices. We’ve noticed Hannah tends to mostly wear thin, simpler pendant necklaces with her Urban Outfitters babydoll dresses, like this Adel Chefridi Four Star Harmony Necklace. We could definitely envision Hannah wearing these fun Blu Bijoux Round Lime Druzy Earrings, some artsy, easy, colorful studs that are super versatile.
We want your take on the Girls’ styles: Whose jewelry collection would you most like to go shopping in: Shoshanna, Jessa, Marnie or Hannah?
Love Jessa’s style… she wears so many vintage one-of-a-kind pieces!
